A car battery is a 12-volt battery. But a fully charged one actually reads 12.6 volts. That’s the number you want to see. Anything lower means your battery needs some attention.

What Is the Normal Car Battery Voltage?

How to Check Your Car Battery Voltage

You just need a multimeter. It is a small inexpensive tool and the test takes less than two minutes.

Step 1: Let the car sit for at least one hour. 

Do not test right after driving. The battery holds a surface charge after a drive and gives you a falsely high reading. One hour of rest gives you the real number.

Step 2: Set your multimeter to DC voltage. 

Turn the dial to DC volts. Set the range to 20V. This covers the full range of a car battery reading.

Step 3: Connect the probes. 

Touch the red probe to the positive terminal. Touch the black probe to the negative terminal. Both terminals are marked with a plus and minus sign on the battery.
